Editors read all freelance articles submitted, but much prefer to see a letter of query than a finished manuscript. The query should be directed to the department where the story line is the strongest. A freelancer’s best chances lie in the areas of travel, health, parenting and education. Home Energy magazine’s mission is to disseminate objective and practical information on residential energy efficiency, performance, comfort, and affordability. Most articles describe a technology or technique for making homes more efficient. Readers often must estimate how much energy will be saved by a particular measure. Payment: $0.20 per word up to a maximum of $500, plus $10 for each piece of useable art (photos and figures). Length: 1,800-3,500 words maximum.

Midwest Home publishes stories on beautiful and functional spaces inside and outside Minnesota homes. The editors are always looking for examples of fine design in area homes, remodels, rooms, landscapes, and gardens. The editors also seeking articles on architect-designed houses, renovations, and additions; extraordinary landscapes and gardens; and interior design and building trend stories. All Midwest Home stories must have strong Minnesota connections. Word count: 750-1000 words. Payment: to be determined.

Mother Earth Living magazine is for readers interested in living a healthy, environmentally conscious lifestyle. We welcome queries at all times on topics suitable for any time of year. Various sections of the magazine have different requirements. Articles in the four departments–Home, Health, Food and Garden–should be succinct and shorter than features. Features are longer and frequently require vendor resourcesinformation on where you can buy certain products. Mother Earth Living buys non-exclusive first North American and reprint rights. Pays $25-150 per article. Payment is upon publication.
