Trail Runner is the country’s leading magazine for off-road running enthusiasts. Articles inspire readers to enjoy the outdoors and to improve their health and fitness through the sport of trail running. Feature articles cover a gamut of topics, including personality profiles, top trail-running destinations, race profiles/reports and issues in our sport, and generally run 2000 to 3000 words (and include a short sidebar or two). Features: 2K-3K words/feature articles; Long Departments: 1K-1200 words; Service Departments: 800-1000 words. Payment: 25 cents/word.

Sports Spectrum magazine is intended to allow Christian athletes to tell how their faith and their knowledge of God’s Word help them as they face difficult issues. These articles generally run from 1,500 to 2,000 words plus one or two sidebars, which run generally 150 words. Payment is made according to assigned word count. Payment is 21 cents/word.

Produced by WBUR in Boston, Only A Game puts sports in perspective with intelligent analysis, insightful interviews, and a keen sense humor. Pays: $100 per minute of produced piece; $400 for shorter pieces.

Runner’s World provides runners at all levels with the most up-to-date information on training, nutrition, injury prevention, sports psychology and total fitness. These departments offer the best opportunities for freelancers: “What it takes to…”, “Rave Run” and “Life & Times.” It’s not necessary to query when contributing to these sections of the magazine; all submissions are on speculation. Payment: up to $300/department and up to $2,000/feature article. Rates are negotiated.

Referee magazine features exclusive and complete coverage of the news, issues, and personalities related to sports officiating. Sports-specific articles may pertain to rules, mechanics or officiating philosophy. Rules articles must include parenthetical rulebook, casebook or approved ruling references to the pertinent rules. All sport-specific articles should be around 500-1,000 words; features vary from 1,500-3,500 words. Rates are generally four cents per published word, but they may increase depending on how we use the text.

Dirt Rag, published seven times per year, is a magazine written by and for people who ride their bikes offroad. The editors buy articles for features and departments. Word length: 1000-3500 words/feature article; 100-500 words/department. Payment: 10 cents/word. Payment per photo is between $25 to $100.

Black Belt Communications accepts freelance articles on a variety of martial arts topics, including style analyses, how-to pieces, interviews, profiles, historical and philosophical manuscripts, and training pieces. Articles must address an area of specific interest or concern for the serious martial artist. The vast majority of stories are educational; they either teach technical and strategic skills, or enlighten the reader about historical and philosophical matters. Word length: 1K-3K words per article. Feature articles with good photos receive $150 to $300, which is paid upon publication.

The editors are interested in: 1) Travel stories that give our readers a look at, and solid information about, new areas where they can snowmobile. 2) Sled modification stories, where an individual has customized his or her sled. 3) How-to stories describing how to modify or improve your sled, complete with pictures of the steps. 4) Personality stories about interesting people of note in the snowmobile world. Again we would want several pictures of the story subject. Word length: under 1,200 words. Pay starts at $100/article. Pay for stories varies depending on length, time required to gather the information, quality and type of story. Likewise, pay will vary for photos.

Adventure Cyclist is a magazine published nine times yearly by the Adventure Cycling Association, a nonprofit service organization for bicyclists. Adventure Cyclist generally uses two types of stories from free-lancers: 1) “The Final Mile” which are essays less about locale than about a singular experience while on a bicycle trip; and 2) Feature-length stories which are about specific areas and must be accompanied by photos. These run in the 2,700 to 3,000 word range. Payment for manuscripts is negotiable, but generally ranges from 40-60 cents/word.
